William C. Oakes, Assistant Professor, Freshman Engineering, and Co-Director, Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), will make a presentation about EPICS. Prof. Oakes came to Purdue in 1998 and has a B.S.M.E. degree (1985) from Michigan State; a M.S.M.E. degree (1987) and Ph.D. degree (1997) from Purdue. EPICS is an innovative program that places teams of undergraduate engineering students into a partnership with local community service agencies. Prof. Oakes will be introduced by BARB DOSTER, Program Coordinator for the month of June.

CONGRATULATIONS to MARTHA CHISCON (“JC” picture) who was featured in an article regarding her retirement from Purdue as Associate Dean, School of Sciences, and Professor of Biological Sciences, in which Robert Ringel, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, indicated that Purdue would need three or four people to replace her. And, it was so neat that MARTHA noted the inspiration and influence of spouse, AL, on her teaching. MARTHA, it was a neat and well deserved article.

CONGRATULATIONS to MARGERY ISMAIL and TOM PEARSON who today became the Club’s 178th and 179th recipients of Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognitions. JIM TURLEY, Chair, International Foundation Committee, noted in presenting MARGERY and TOM their certificate, medallion, and lapel pin, that this was The Rotary International Foundation (RI)’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for the Foundation’s founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who stared RI with three business associates in 1905. A PHF represents a contribution of $1,000.00 to the Foundation and may be an initial contribution of $1,000.00. Or, a PHF may be started with an initial contribution of $100.00, Paul Harris Sustaining member; any contributions from this time on will be applied toward the PHF, hopefully the $1,000.00 will be reached within ten years.

Lynne Zachmanoglou and Jim Dworkin have resigned from Rotary. Jim is moving to northern IN where is now Chancellor of Purdue’s North Central Campus.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

TERRY WEST, Co-Chair, Ambassadorial Scholars Committee, announced Tuesday, May 16th, that Ryan John Casteel (Ryan), the Ambassadorial Scholar candidate from our Club, was selected by the District Committee as an Ambassadorial Scholar from District 6560. Ryan will be attending the American University in Cairo , EGYPT. He is from Decatur, IL and from August 1995 to present is working on a B.S. degree in the School of Computer and Electrical Engineering, Purdue. Previous educational experiences include International Relations, University of Illinois, Champaign, IL, June 1996 - August 1996, and National Security Studies, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., January 1998 - May 1998. Hopefully Ryan will be attending a Club meeting in the future.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Frank J. Devlyn, Rotary International (RI) President for the 2000-2001 Rotary Year, will be the speaker at the Club’s meeting, Tuesday evening, July 18th, (Club Board voted unanimously to change the official meeting from a noon meeting to an evening meeting) at the University Inn Conference Center & Suites. The Executive Committee will meet at 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 31st, Brass Rail Room, Purdue Memorial Union, to plan a formal agenda for this evening meeting with RI President Frank Devlyn.

STILL OPENINGS FOR SMALL GROUP DINNER: CARL and CAROL REW are hosting the next small group dinner in their home on Wednesday, June 7th. Cost is $8.00 per person; if interested, contact JANE TURNER.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF INDIANAPOLIS is planning train transportation to the 2001 Rotary International Conference in San Antonio, TX, June 20-28, 2001. Plans call for bus transportation from Indianapolis to Champaign, IL, board Amtrak there, spend first night in New Orleans, LA, and then on to San Antonio. Cost is $375.00 for coach seat or $550.00 for standard compartment. Reservations need to be made by Friday, June 9th; the need for this early reservation time is to reserve hotel space in New Orleans. Contact GRIFF if interested.

INDIANAPOLIS-SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB is seeking endorsement, by June 15th, of a proposed legislative enactment and resolution to The Rotary International Legislative Council. The purpose of this legislative enactment and resolution is to supplement the present system of district numbers with a system of district names, and to request that The Board of Directors establish a method to create district names. The Club Board meets Monday, June 12th; therefore, if you have a reaction, make it known to President GENE or other Board members.

VICE PRESIDENT OSCAR introduced JEFF DARLING, Chair, Youth Committee, who made presentations to agencies for camperships and journalism scholarships: $200.00 to Lee Bossy, Adult Development Director, Girl Scouts; $300.00 each to Sarah Gaggle and Jake Senesac, Jefferson High School, journalism scholarships to IU, Sarah and Jake were accompanied by Chuck Herber, Journalism Teacher at Jefferson; $600.00 each to Jill Vaught, Executive Director, Arc of Tippecanoe County, Kathy Stewart, Program Manager, Jr. Achievement, Ruth Breyley, Youth & Family Director, YWCA, and Joe Bumbleburg, Assistant Secretary, Lafayette Parks Foundation; $900.00 to Patti Hall, Senior Programs Director, YMCA. All were luncheon guests of the Club.

Dan is married and the father of two children; works full-time locally; and majoring in Computer Information Systems Networking and minoring in PC Support Administration. JAN presented a certificate of recognition, and Vice President OSCAR presented a Rotary Travel mug (4-Way Test on it) to Dan.

NOTES FROM THE CLUB, Monday, May 8th, and FOUNDATION, Wednesday, May 10th, BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS:

Club Board: (1) DALE MC HENRY, Treasurer, reviewed the Cash Receipts and Disbursements Summary Report for April 2000; and as of May 7th, 46 members had not paid their dues; (2) TOM SCHMIDT, Chair, Funds Request Committee (Committee), reported that the Committee had received four requests for funds, Committee forwarded the $1,146.00 from United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana, Inc. to complete balance to purchase a power wheelchair van lift and tie-downs for a van owned by Latisha Harlan to transport her daughter, Teresa, who has quadriplegia as a result of cerebral palsy to the Club Board for consideration; BOB GARRISON, Committee member, developed an eight criteria “check list”/”request profile” to use in evaluating these and future requests, criteria are: (a) Project has a clearly defined scope; (b) Project request is $500.00 to $3,000.00; (c) Request is for a local project; (d) Request is not for recurring operating expenses; (e) Request information appears to be accurate; (f) Conflict of interest and favoritism are absent; (g) 501 (c) status has been verified; and (h) Acceptable population will benefit; (3) President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) reported on the District Conference: Over 300 in attendance with eight from our Club; Silent auction raised over $3,000.00 for PolioPlus (Club’s contribution obtained by BOB GARRISON - two tickets to Purdue Musical Organizations’ Christmas Show, overnight and dinner for two at the Radisson Inn, and dinner for four at Arni’s); Memorial service for deceased Rotarians was well done, copies of memorial service, at request of BETTY NELSON, were sent to sons of HAROLD MICHAEL and HUGH STEELE, daughter of JOE SICER, and spouses of BILL HAYT and EV WRIGHT; DAVE BOUGH made a useful and effective presentation regarding “matching grants”; and NICK CLARK was present with an interesting display regarding The Museums of Prophetstown; (4) JIM KLUSMAN, Chair, Task Force, updated the Board on the identification of six areas, from the Club objective and mission, that could be investigated in greater depth in order to strengthen the Club, i.e., Fellowship; High Ethical Standards; Serving Others; Advancing Community Goodwill; Advancing International Goodwill; and Governance; Board members were requested to select two areas, from the six, which they felt were the most important for the Task Force to investigate further - the two selected were Fellowship and Serving Others; (5) Determined that Saturday, April 7, 2001 would be the date for the Rotary/PMO Service Above Self Committee fund raising event; (6) Annual Dinner Committee to recommend to the Board a date and location for the Annual Dinner; (7) Board voted to cancel the regular Club meeting on Tuesday, October17th, in order to join with the “all-service club” meeting on Thursday, October 19th, hosted by Kiwanis, with Purdue’s men and women basketball coaches the speakers; and (8) Board, at the request of BILL HATFIELD, voted to participate again this year, at the same financial level, with the Indianapolis Club in hosting a Russian Political Team sponsored by the Library of Congress, will be here during State Fair week.

Foundation Board: (1) HOWARD DIESSLIN, Chair, Investment Committee, presented a quarterly report for the first three months of 2000 which showed total of all investments to be down 1.6%; (2) Board approved the $1,146.00 request recommended by the Funds Request Committee and Club Board with the request that TOM SCHMIDT, Chair, Funds Request Committee, investigate a local installation place regarding cost; President GENE reviewed the Club Board meeting for the Foundation Board; and (3) Board noted that Diamond and Double Diamond plaques would be distributed at the May 16th Club meeting.

VICE PRESIDENT OSCAR, substituting for MARK DAVIS, introduced JIM TURLEY who made an interesting presentation about the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA). JIM noted that: Founded in 1925 by Dr. Richard Wetherill and his associates; Mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Tippecanoe County so that the past may shed light on the present and the future; A not for profit corporation (501 (3) C) and is not a government entity in spite of the use of the word County in the title; Scope of operation is the Blockhouse, Dig site, Brand Bluffs, Fowler House, the Wetherill Center and Library, and the Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum (both the archaeological dig site and Battlefield are listed on the National Register of Historic Places); Funding sources include the Feast (over 60%), memberships, annual appeals, site fees, gift shop sales, special fund raising events such as the Speakeasy, the Legends of Lafayette, and tours; Grants and gifts fund most of capital projects; and In 1999, Board of Governors completed a strategic plan which will guide TCHA for the next five to seven years, i.e. (1) A period house interpretation for Fowler House; (2) Improvements in the facilities at the Battlefield; (3) Creation of museum and storage space for the Fort Ouiatenon artifacts; and (4) Collaboration with the County Parks Department at Fort Ouiatenon and the Battlefield, with City of Lafayette, and with Prophetstown. JIM closed with ways the community can help preserve and support the TCHA: Become a member; Be sure to put TCHA sites on list of things to do when hosting visitors; Volunteer; Attend/and/or participate in the Feast; Become an annual supporter; Look for your history; Think of The History People as a Tippecanoe County Natural Resource, to be preserved and nurtured so that the past does indeed shed light on the present and the future.
