Rotarian JIM TURLEY, Interim Executive Director, Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA), will speak on “TCHA - Beyond the Feast.” Jim will be introduced by MARK DAVIS, Program Coordinator for the month of May.

CONGRATULATIONS to BOB and CONNIE GRIFFITHS on the arrival of two grandchildren, announced late since Grandpa BOB was busy campaigning: (1) A granddaughter, Paige Hunter Griffiths, born to James and Ann Marie Griffiths on Monday, April 3rd, in Cincinnati, OH; and (2) A grandson, Jackson Parker Brandon, born to Laurie (Griffiths) and Todd Brandon on Saturday, May 6th, in Cleveland, OH. Thanks to BOB and CONNIE for their significant gift to the Lafayette Foundation in honor of Paige Hunter Griffiths and Jackson Parker Brandon.

CONGRATULATIONS to JIM KLUSMAN and WALT VALENTINE who have become the Club’s 176th and 177th recipients of Paul Harris Fellow recognitions - JIM, at his request, was presented his Paul Harris Fellow certificate, medallion, and lapel pin by President GENE at the recent Planning Committee meeting, Thursday, May 4th, at the Elmhurst Building, home of the Community Foundation and United Way, and WALT, at his request, received his Paul Harris Fellow certificate, medallion, and lapel at today’s Club meeting.

ROBERT MEYER (BOB) with classification SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS & INSTITUTIONS--Salvation Army, was introduced by his sponsor TOM SCHMIDT. BOB and his spouse, LINDA, are the parents of two children and reside at 1701 Teakwood Court, Lafayette 47905-4123. BOB, a Major in the Salvation Army, has been a Rotarian at St. Joseph, MO, and Evansville; has been with the Salvation Army for 25 years; and his office is located at 1110 Union Street, Lafayette 47904- 4123 - telephone 742-0006.

SUZIE COLES (SUZIE) with classification PHOTOGRAPHY--Portrait, was introduced by her sponsor, BETTY DOVERSBERGER. SUZIE and her spouse, LARRY, are the parents of three sons, and reside at 150 Hideaway Lane, West Lafayette 47906-1201 - telephone 497-4767. SUZIE is a professional photographer, has a degree in photography from Purdue, and is significantly involved with the arts, i.e., currently Interim Director, Tippecanoe Arts Federation (TAF), and Past President of the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art. SUZIE’s Rotary committees are PMO Committee (BOB VERPLANK, Chair); and Youth Committee (JEFF DARLING, Chair).

SUSAN and STEVE HYCHKA received an e-mail from Gabriel Franco (visiting Rotarian from Tlaquepaque, MEXICO, and former Ambassadorial Scholar whom they hosted following the District Conference) expressing his thanks to SUSAN, STEVE, and their daughter for their kindness and hospitality; to President GENE and the Club; to DOUG and CINDY TAYLOR who hosted him for one day in their home; and to CAROL GENTRY, spouse of DON, who assisted with arrangements with Purdue Visitor Center and Civil Engineering staff, especially Chuck Scholer who was his professor 22 years ago.

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: JERRY MC CARTHY conducted a new member Rotary Information Session today. Four candidates were in attendance and expressed an interest in becoming members of the Club, they are: Debbie Hoppes, Partner, Huth Thompson LLP, sponsor CHRIS FUNK; Tracie Hughes, Director, Placement, Indiana Business College, sponsor JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; Tim Knuppel, Director of Sales, University Inn Conference Center & Suites, sponsor GRIFF; and David Roquemore, Senior Pastor, Central Presbyterian Church, sponsor BILL LOVELL. If no written objections are received within seven days and Rotary committee selection sheets are completed, Debbie, Tracie, Tim, and David are eligible for introduction on or after June 6th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

TERRY WEST, Co-Chair, Ambassadorial Scholars Committee, announced last week, May 16th, that Ryan John Casteel, the Ambassadorial Scholar candidate from our Club, was selected by the District Committee. More about this in future issues of “Ripples.”

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Frank J. Devlyn, Rotary International (RI) President for the 2000-2001 Rotary Year, will be the speaker at the Club’s meeting, Tuesday evening, July 18th (Club Board voted unanimously to change the official meeting from a noon meeting to an evening meeting) at the University Inn Conference Center & Suites. The Executive Committee will meet at 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 31st, Brass Rail Room, Purdue Memorial Union, to plan a formal agenda for this evening meeting with RI President Frank Devlyn.

STILL OPENINGS FOR SMALL GROUP DINNER: CARL and CAROL REW are hosting the next small group dinner in their home on Wednesday, June 7th. Cost is $8.00 per person; if interested, contact JANE TURNER.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF INDIANAPOLIS is planning train transportation to the 2001 Rotary International Conference in San Antonio, TX, June 20-28, 2001. Plans call for bus transportation from Indianapolis to Champaign, IL, board Amtrak there, spend first night in New Orleans, LA, and then on to San Antonio. Cost is $375.00 for coach seat or $550.00 for standard compartment. Reservations need to be made by Friday, June 9th; the need for this early reservation time is to reserve hotel space in New Orleans. Contact GRIFF if interested.

INDIANAPOLIS-SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB is seeking endorsement, by June 15th, of a proposed legislative enactment and resolution to The Rotary International Legislative Council. The purpose of this legislative enactment and resolution is to supplement the present system of district numbers with a system of district names, and to request that The Board of Directors establish a method to create district names. The Club Board meets Monday, June 12th; therefore, if you have a reaction, make it known to President GENE or other Board members.

WEST LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Elizabeth McNamara and David Abraham, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by JIM FENN. JIM presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary Travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Elizabeth and David. The Student Guests Program ends this week for 1999-2000; thanks to BARB DOSTER, Chair, and members of the Committee for their efforts in the Community Avenue of Service activity.

DANA SMITH, substituting for MARK DAVIS, introduced Mike Brooks who made an interesting presentation about the history of the Greater Lafayette Progress, Inc. and trends and challenges/opportunities available as IN moves toward high tech initiatives.
