Volume 84, Number 43 – May 2, 2000

This will be the recognition of seniors from Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO), i.e., Bell Choir, PMO Express, Purduettes, University Choir, and Varsity Glee Club, by the PMO Committee, BOB VERPLANK, Chair; the PMO Committee replaces the former Glee Club Committee. This is an effort to broaden the relationship of Rotary beyond just the Varsity Glee Club and to recognize the efforts of the entire PMO in the recent Long Center Restoration Project effort on Saturday, April 8th. The Club Board at its April 25th meeting voted to invite the senior members of PMO to be the Club’s guests at lunch on Tuesday, May 9th, and present each a Rotary brass wheel with their name engraved on the back.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - MIKE SANDERS, 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and DICK KOHLS, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - DONYA LESTER; Invocation - BARB DOSTER; Music - CORKY MITCHELL; and High School Guests (Jefferson) hosted by KIRK CLARK.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; BOB HOGUE, spouse, MARTHELLEN, this p.m. indicated that BOB had a doctor’s appointment this a.m., doctor indicated that BOB is getting along really well, and will be running some additional tests; DALE MC HENRY; PEGGY OWENS, spouse of BRUCE; SANDY PEARLMAN; MARV PHILLIPS; BEV STONE; and MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK, DICK reported that MARJORIE had fallen and cracked five vertebrae in her back.

Kathy Davis and Eric Murphy have resigned from Rotary.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS:

ROBERT S. MILLER (ROB) with classification ADVERTISING & PUBLICITY--Outdoor Advertising Services, was introduced by his sponsor, JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER. Rob Miller ROB is General Manager, Burkhart Advertising, Inc., 1475 Navco Drive, Lafayette, 47905-4796 - telephone 447-7000, and transferring his Rotary membership from Muncie Noon; hobbies are golf and fishing. He and his spouse, JOAN, are the parents of two girls, six and three years old, have purchased a home here, and hope to be moved to the Greater Lafayette area by June. ROB’s Rotary committees are Hospitality (HARLEY FREY, Chair); and Community Service Projects (LEW RUNNELS, Chair).

SANDY ALLENDE (SANDY) with classification FINANCE--Security Advisor, was introduced by her sponsor, JIM BODENMILLER. Allende SANDY is the mother of two children and resides at 3630 Glenridge Lane, West Lafayette, 47906-8633 - telephone 497-8183; hobbies are reading, traveling, drama, and is active with the Greater Lafayette Symphony. She is Security Advisor with Banc One Securities, 201 Main Street, Lafayette 47901 - telephone 423-0315. SANDY’s Rotary committees are Salvation Army (ANN PIECHOTA, Chair); International Center, (VINCE BRALTS), Chair; and Youth Committee (JEFF DARLING, Chair).

JAMES D. BUESCHER (JIM) with classification Past Service, ALUMINUM INDUSTRY--Administration, was introduced by his sponsor HANS NAUMANN. Buescher JIM and his spouse, MARY BETH, reside at 216 Sheffield Road, West Lafayette, IN 47906-8601 - telephone 463-7648. JIM was Vice President, Sales and Marketing, prior to his retirement from Alcoa Inc. His Rotary committees are Hospitality (HARLEY FREY, Chair); and Community Service Projects (LEW RUNNELS, Chair).

AS OF TODAY, there are 276 members: 155 - Active; 4 - Additional Active; 102 - Senior Active; 10 - Past Service; and 5 - Honorary.

STEVE THOMPSON, President and TOM PEARSON, Vice President, Lafayette Rotary Foundation Inc. (Foundation) presented framed Golden Service certificates and gold badges (recognizing contributions of $1,000.00 but less than $2,500.00 to the Foundation) to JIM BODENMILLER; DOUG BRANIGIN; President GENE; CHRIS FUNK; DAN HEMAN; BILL HINZE; FRED KUIPERS; STEVE STUCKY; and DAN TEDER; three Rotarians were not present to receive their framed certificates and badges - ARNI COHEN; GUS GUSTAFSON; and ERIC MEISTER. STEVE noted that 83 Rotarians, including today’s recipients have reached the Golden Service Level; 26 Rotarians have reached the Golden Service Plus Level (more than $2,500.00 but less than $5,000.00); nine Rotarians have reached the Diamond Level (more than $5,000.00 but less than $10,000.00); and five Rotarians have reached the Double Diamond Level ($10,000.00 or more). Plaques recognizing Double Diamond and Diamond Level contributors will be presented at the May 16th Club meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

TUESDAY, MAY 9TH IS LAST DAY FOR PICTURES and CORRECTIONS FOR DIRECTORY - Directory is DUE OUT IN JULY 2000. CHRIS FUNK will be taking pictures before and after regular Club meeting next week; upon arrival contact GRIFF for the area where pictures are being taken. It’s CHRIS’ goal to get new pictures for every Rotarian over the next couple of years. PLEASE COOPERATE AND GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN NEXT WEEK or PROVIDE A BLACK/WHITE GLOSSY THAT CAN BE USED. Also, it is important that you inform GRIFF regarding Directory information which SHOULD BE CORRECTED!

SMALL GROUP DINNERS: JANE TURNER announced that Small Group Dinners would begin again with JANE hosting one in her home on Thursday, May 4th, and CARL and CAROL REW hosting the next one in their home on Wednesday, June 7th. Cost is $8.00 per person. JANE indicated today that two couples canceled for May 4th, so there is space available, if interested, contact JANE.

VISITING ROTARIANS: Ed Elliott, Naples, FL; and Gabriel Franco, San Pedro de Tlaquepaque Rotary Club, Jalisco, MEXICO. Gabriel is a former Ambassadorial Scholar.

VISITORS: MARJORIE MORRIS, spouse of RALPH; Deborah Axness (Central Catholic), Betty Burkinshaw (Harrison), Sandy Shoemaker (McCutcheon), and Linda Sorensen (West Lafayette), Guidance Counselors, guests of the Club, who met prior to lunch with members of the Scholarships & Citizenship Committee to review the scholarship and citizenship awards; Deb Hoppes (Partner, Huth Thompson LLP) guest of CHRIS FUNK; Bob Modlin (Retired, Dentist), guest of BILL HATFIELD; David Roquemore (Senior Pastor, Central Presbyterian Church), guest of BILL LOVELL; Ken Downing, Luguna Nigule, CA, and Al Kibbler, Golden CO, guests of LEW RUNNELS; Bob Meyer (Officer-in-Charge, Salvation Army) guest of TOM SCHMIDT; and Jola Opiela (Purdue graduate student from Krakow, POLAND, who has been staying with TERRY and SHIRLEY WEST), guest of TERRY WEST.

HARRISON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Kyra Busch and Matt Ruckman, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by SUSAN SMITH. SUSAN presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary Travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Kyra and Matt. Kyra is the granddaughter of RALPH and MARJORIE MORRIS.

JO WADE, substituting for MARK DAVIS,Morog Program Coordinator for the month of May, introduced Jim Morog and Mark Scharer, Partners (architectural graduates of Ball State University), Paradigm Development, LLC, and developers of the 5th Street Brownstones (Brownstones) and other projects in Lafayette. Jim, with the aid of slides, told about the development of the Brownstones project.
