CORRESPONDENCE from BOB BROCK...Thanks for the nice flowering plant sent while I was in the hospital. I was in much pain when that came and as they say, “I needed that.” Thanks so much.

E-MAIL from BOB HOGUE...Thanks and appreciation for the lovely pink azaleas, it is very beautiful and makes a bright spot in our room. We truly do appreciate the flower and are thankful for our friends at Lafayette Rotary.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • ROTARY INFORMATION SESSION (Session): Another Session which every prospective member must attend is being planned. These Sessions are at 11:00 a.m. prior to a regular Club meeting and conducted by JERRY MC CARTHY, member of the Membership and Information Committee. If you are considering the sponsorship of a new member, please contact GRIFF.

  • BETTY NELSON still is needing volunteers to assist with various functions at the Long Center For The Performing Arts (Long Center) for the “Singing for Greater Lafayette”, Rotary/Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO) fund raiser on Saturday, April 8th; approximately 35 volunteers are needed for the following tasks: Ushers (12); Ticket Takers (4); Program Distributors (4); Box Office Staff (already filled); State Communications (3); Stage Crew (6); Concierge Service (3); and Drink (water) hosts (3). Please contact BETTY or GRIFF if you would be willing to assist.

  • PLEASE DO NOT FORGET the “SINGING FOR GREATER LAFAYETTE”, this cooperative effort on the part of Rotary and the Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO), to raise money for the Long Center Restoration Project (Project). This event will feature the six units of PMO (Purdue Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes, PMO Express, University Choir, Purdue Bell Choir, and PMO Kids Choir) presenting a 90-minute, no intermission, performance at 7:30 p.m., (not 8:00 p.m.) Saturday, April 8th, the Long Center For The Performing Arts (Long Center). This issue of “Ripples”, is being mailed to all Rotarians and includes a letter from JERRY COLE, Chair, Marketing Subcommittee, and DON GENTRY, Chair, Professional and Business Patrons Program Subcommittee, as well as two ticket order forms (canary) and one Professional and Business Patrons form (golden rod). These forms are not only to offer YOU an opportunity to purchase tickets, but much more importantly for YOU to circulate them to your neighbors and friends for their utilization. All Rotarians are considered extensions of these two Subcommittees. Selling out the 1200-seat Long Center could raise in excess of $20,000.00 for this very worthwhile Project. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

  • Come Sail the Rotary C’s” (Consistency, Credibility, and Continuity), theme for the Rotary District 656 Conference, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, 2000, Holiday Inn, Lebanon. Conference registration forms are available at GRIFF’s table.

THE ROTARY-GLEE CLUB ANNUAL DINNER (Dinner) was an outstanding success thanks to OSCAR HOPKINS (OSCAR), Club Vice President, and Chair, Annual Dinner Committee, and Committee members (BRIAN BREED; AL CHISCON; JIM HANKS; JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; DALE MC HENRY; KATHY MEEKS; ERIC MURPHY; GREG NAPIER; PARKIE PARKHURST; BARRIE SIMPSON; and PAUL ZIEMER). OSCAR, as evening host, noted that: (1) Tonight we are celebrating the DIFFERENCE Rotary has made and continues to make in our community and around the world; (2) Of equal importance to celebrate our friendship with each other and the members of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club; and (3) Theme for this dinner is “Rotary Makes A Difference.” Prior to the invocation, the audience was requested to pause for moment to remember Rotarians who have died since the last Dinner: HAROLD L. MICHAEL (8/3/99); HUGH H. STEELE, SR. (8/18/99); WILLIAM H. HAYT, JR. (10/14/99); and EVERETT WRIGHT (1/1/00). Following dinner, OSCAR then introduced the following: (1) President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) and spouse, PHYLLIS; BRIAN BREED, Director, PMO; Jae Israel-Kellogg, Assistant Director, PMO; Jerry Erskine, District Governor, Rotary International District 6560 (RC of Lebanon) and spouse, MARGE; BILL HATFIELD, and HAROLD TAYLOR, Past District Governors; and Ed and Cleon Gruber, John Klepinger, and LaVaune Million from the RC of Delphi; (2) Spouses of deceased Rotarians - Evelyn Ball (CABLE); Janet Bradshaw (JOHN); Rosemary Funk (CARL); Mary Graham (TOM); Barbara Kampen (EMERSON); Silvia Levinson (BERT); Mary Moore (BRUCE); Janet Thornton (DICK); and Margaret Trimmer (HENRY); (3) Enrico Pinto, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from BRAZIL and his Rotarian host family, DAVE and ADRIENNE BOUGH (DAVE is Vice President Elect and will serve as Chair, Annual Dinner Committee, next year); and (4) His spouse BEVERLY, and Ewa Checko, an Exchange Student from the Agriculture University in Cracow, POLAND, who is living with them and studying at Purdue this semester. The audience was asked to view the program and note the names of New Rotarians since the last Dinner; contributors to the various levels of the Lafayette Rotary Foundation, i.e., Double Diamond, Diamond, Golden Plus, and Golden Service; and Paul Harris Fellows, members who have made contributions of at least $1,000.00 to The Rotary International Foundation. There were several highlights of the evening: (1) Recognizing the 80th birthday, the 21st was his birthdate, of BOB ADAMS, who had “Happy Birthday” sung to him by the Glee Club; (2) Another highlight was the awarding of the Rotarian-of-the Year Award to JERRY MC CARTHY by President GENE, it is hoped that the next issue of “Ripples” will have space enough to offer some, if not all, of the Rotary and community efforts of JERRY; (3) Another highlight was the premier showing of a nine-minute video, produced by CHRIS FUNK, and narrated by JIM HANKS, which illustrated why it is felt that “Rotary Makes A Difference” - as OSCAR’s introduction stated, “Sit back and prepare for a brief ride as CHRIS and JIM take us through the fields of Rotary’s many endeavors”; and of course (4) Another outstanding performance by the Purdue Varsity Glee Club under the direction of BRIAN BREED, Brian Breed and accompanied by Jae Israel-Kellogg at the piano; outstanding performances by individuals, groups, and the Glee Club, plus the different format, i.e., performing in the center of the Grand Ballroom, made their performance one of the best ever. It was a most enjoyable evening!
