NO REGULAR ROTARY NOON CLUB MEETING - TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2000

Tuesday evening, March 21, 2000, is the Lafayette Rotary Club’s Annual Dinner (Dinner) with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, directed by BRIAN BREED. Brian Breed There will be a cash bar beginning at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. Glee Club members, as in the past few years, will be joining us for dinner with one or two Glee Club members at each table - be sure to save one or two seats at your table for Glee Club members. Rotary name badges and check-in sheet will be located at the Grand Ballroom; provision will be made to complete badges for spouses and/or special guests. Tickets, $25.00 per person, will be available until 12:00 noon, Friday, March 17th; contact ERIC MURPHY, Director of Sales, University Inn at 497-9515, or GRIFF at 494-7218 - Office or 474-5596 - Residence. Tickets will be held at the door of the Grand Ballroom.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers, BOB BROCK, talked with BOB this p.m., indicated that he was painfully recuperating, walking without a cane, saw the doctor this a.m. and was told it would be a couple more weeks; LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; MARTHELLEN HOGUE, spouse of BOB, called Friday p.m. to indicate that while on their recent trip to Dallas, TX to visit a son, BOB became ill, diagnosed at a Dallas hospital as having pre-leukemia, was hospitalized there for a few days, flew home, doctor here has him on a medication which has helped as he is able to drive, and noted that had diagnosis gone much longer his condition would have been much more serious; SANDY PEARLMAN, who had hip replacement at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis last Wednesday, March 8th; MARV PHILLIPS; JOE SICER; and BEV STONE.

CONGRATULATIONS TO:

  • BOB HANNEMANN (“Leader” picture) who was honored at the Harrison Bob Hannemann High School Athletic Department’s “2000 Boy’s Basketball Senior Night” on March 3rd, as an outstanding contributor to the athletic program (BOB served as Harrison’s only team physician since the school began).

  • CHRISTY SMITH (“JC “ picture), Executive Director, Christy Smith Leadership Lafayette, who was honored, one of six from 48 nominees, at the YWCA Salute to Women banquet, March 7th, University Inn.

     

     

DENNIS DUNN, speaker on February 29th, requested, in lieu of the Rotary wheel, that $10.00 be donated to the Lafayette Foundation.

JOHN CARPENTER back to Rotary after spending an extended time in Naples, FL.

Neal Eckard has resigned from Rotary.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER:

LARRY L. TIPTON (LARRY) with classification BUSINESS SERVICES--Water-Operations Managers, Larry Tipton was introduced by GRIFF, substituting for his sponsor, DANA SMITH. LARRY and his spouse, DEBORAH, are the parents of four children all away from home, and currently residing in a West Lafayette apartment, P. O. Box 2471, West Lafayette 47906-2471, until they can locate or build a home. LARRY was a Rotarian in the Shelbyville Rotary Club, in fact, was President Elect of that Club. He is Operations Manager, Indiana-American Water Company, Inc., Company recently purchased United Water West Lafayette Inc., with office at 2522 Covington Street, West Lafayette 47906-2359 - telephone 463-5531 - Extension 16, FAX 497-3396.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • PLEASE DO NOT FORGET the “SINGING FOR GREATER LAFAYETTE”, an annual cooperative effort on the part of Rotary and the Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO), to raise money for a community project. This year the event will be held at the Long Center For The Performing Arts (Long Center), Saturday, April 8th, with funds designated for the Long Center Restoration Project. The next issue of “Ripples”, mailed to everyone, will include two yellow ticket order forms for this event, these forms are not only to offer Rotarians an opportunity to purchase tickets, but much more importantly for Rotarians to give to neighbors/friends for their use. Please help to promote this very worthwhile gala benefit event. Tickets are $50.00, $30.00, and $10.00, and most importantly is that any amount over $10.00 is tax exempt. PLEASE NOTE TWO IMPORTANT ITEMS: (1) PERFORMANCE STARTS AT 7:30 P.M., NOT 8:00 P.M. AS NOTED ON ORDER FORM - BE SURE TO NOTE THIS TO PROSPECTIVE TICKET PURCHASERS, and (2) TICKETS ARE MAILED FROM THE LONG THEATER BOX OFFICE - CORRECT STARTING TIME IS ON TICKETS.

    BETTY NELSON still needs volunteers to perform various functions, i.e., ushers, ticket takers, program distributors, stage crew, concierge service, and drink (water) host.

  • “Come Sail the Rotary C’s” (Consistency, Credibility, and Continuity), theme for the Rotary District 656 Conference, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, 2000, Holiday Inn, Lebanon. Conference registration forms are available at GRIFF’s table.

  • HOSTS NEEDED FOR SMALL GROUP DINNERS, if interested, please contact JANE TURNER.

KEN noted that certificates of recognition would be mailed to each and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to J. T. and Alexis.

SPECIAL GUEST: Enrico Pinto, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from BRAZIL, guest of the Club and hosted/introduced by DAVID BOUGH, host family for Enrico.

TOM SCHMIDT, Senior Director, and STEVE MOTT, former Senior Director, Vocational Schwarz, Schumard, Tatman and Wilson Avenue of Service, and President GENE, presented Vocational Scholarships of $400.00 and certificates of recognition, to Loretta M. Schwarz, West Lafayette, majoring in Business Management; Helen S. Shumard, Brookston, majoring in Elementary Education; Tamela Kaye Tatman, Brookston, majoring in Business Marketing; and Shannon Wilson, Crawfordsville, majoring in the RN Program, all from Ivy Tech State College. Each read essays from their nomination forms and offered a few general remarks. This was a most enjoyable event - thanks to TOM, STEVE, and earlier efforts by Elaine Cue.
