The program is scheduled to be a vocational scholarship awards presentation; however, due to the unexpected resignation of Elaine Cue, Chair, Vocational Project Committee (Committee), see under “CLUB CONCERNS”, in all probability there will be a change. TOM SCHMIDT, Senior Director, and JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER, Director, Vocational Avenue of Service, have contacted KAE MOORE, March Program Coordinator, to determine whether the scheduled March 28th program, Richard Cosier, Dean and Leeds Professor of Management, Krannert School of Management, could be rescheduled for March 14th.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - JUDITH HAMMAN, 11:15 to 11:45, and ERIC MEISTER, 11:45 to 12:15; Greeter - SCOTT DOWNEY; Invocation - CHRISTY SMITH; Music - BOB GRIFFITHS; and High School Guests (Jefferson) hosted by SUSAN SMITH.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: BOB BROCK, according to JERRY COLE, is to come home today from Home Hospital following knee replacement; LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; MARTHELLEN HOGUE, spouse of BOB, called to indicate that BOB is ill; BOB HIATT; SANDY PEARLMAN who goes to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for hip replacement tomorrow, Wednesday, March 8th; MARV PHILLIPS; JOE SICER; and BEV STONE.

YB HALL back to Rotary after suffering a stroke on November 3, 1999; thanks to JOHN OSMUN for bringing YB to Rotary today.

JO WADE back at Rotary following surgery last Tuesday. Thank you note from JO, thanking the Club for the beautiful azaleas.

JIM FUNK back at Rotary following several months in Bolivia, SOUTH AMERICA, good to see him again.

Elaine Cue, via a letter dated February 27th, indicated that she had to make a life changing decision in the last couple of days, was resigning her position as Director, Indiana Business College, and for that reason resigning from Rotary.

COMMITTEE MEETING:

  • Professional and Business Patrons Subcommittee meeting, DON GENTRY, Chair, to meet at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, March 14th, at a designated table in the dining room, University Inn Conference Center and Suites (University Inn). Members of this Subcommittee are: DELL; GRIPE; HANCOCK; JEFFARES; KUIPERS; and DAN TEDER.

  • BETTY NELSON is needing volunteers to assist with various functions at the Long Center for the “Singing for Greater Lafayette” Rotary/PMO fund raiser on Saturday, April 8th; approximately 35 volunteers are needed for the following tasks: Ushers (12); Ticket Takers (4); Program Distributors (4); Box Office Staff (already filled); Stage Communications (3); Stage Crew (6); Concierge Service (3); and Drink (water) Hosts (3) Please contact BETTY or GRIFF if you would be willing to assist.

DAVID WILLIAMS (DAVE) with classification FINANCE--Business Development, was Dave Williams introduced by his sponsor, JIM TURLEY. DAVE retired recently after 34 years with the Lafayette School Corporation, and now in Business Development for PEFCU with office address P. O. Box 1950, West Lafayette - telephone 497-7443. 83RD ANNUAL DINNER (Dinner) - TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2000, UNIVERSITY INN (please remember, no regular Club meeting). It costs $50.00 to $75.00 per person to experience a dinner show at Las Vegas, NV. The Dinner is a bargain at $25.00 per person; don’t miss it. Even if you are unable to attend please consider financial assistance to sponsor one or two of the Club’s guests. Make an effort to be present for the Dinner, Tuesday, March 21st. The evening starts with an open cash bar at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, $25.00 per person, are on sale each Tuesday by DALE MC HENRY, or designee, at the money collection table.

MC CUTCHEON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Stacey Meyer and Ben Scanlon, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by TOM SCHMIDT. TOM presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Stacey and Ben.

KAY MOORE introduced Robert Gardner who made a most Robert Gardner interesting presentation about the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA): (1) History, (started with 15 schools in 1903 because high school principals saw the need for some structure and organization; highest membership was 820 schools; and now 386 schools - 351 public and 35 private); (2) How governed (governed by principals of the members schools); (3) How supported (annual budget in excess of $2 million and comes from gate receipts from tournament games beyond sectionals, broadcast and TV fees, licensing of officials, and a corporate sponsor, Farm Bureau); (4) 160,000 student athletes participating in 20 sports programs - 10 for boys and 10 for girls; (5) Membership fee for each school is $1.50; and (6) Major change was the moving from single class to multi-class team tournament play based on the philosophy that activities should be about youth participation and not spectator participation.
