DENNIS DUNN, Owner and Publisher, Lafayette Leader, will speak on “Understanding the Future of the World in the Next 100 Years.” DENNIS’ presentation was backup for BETTY NELSON’s programs in January (BETTY’s theme was focusing on the future) should one of the speakers traveling from Indianapolis, Cleveland, OH, and Muncie not be able to make the trip due to bad weather. DENNIS will be introduced by JIM HANKS. VERY FULL PROGRAM WITH SPECIAL MUSIC BY PURDUE MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS - PRESIDENT GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) WILL “RING THE STARTING BELL” AT 12:00 NOON.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - DON GENTRY, 11:15 to 11:45, and JERRY MC CARTHY, 11:45 to 12:15; Greeter - GIL SATTERLY; Invocation - JOE KRAUSE; Music - SUSAN SMITH; and No High School Guests.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; YB HALL; BOB HIATT; MARV PHILLIPS; JOE SICER; and BEV STONE.

Telephone call from IRENE KOHLS, spouse of DICK...Thanks for the plant. Doing well following carpal tunnel surgery and cannot write for several days...DICK is learning about the kitchen!

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: JERRY MC CARTHY conducted a new member Rotary Information Session (Session) today, all potential members must attend a Session such as this to learn more about Rotary in order to better decide whether they would like to become a member. Two candidates were in attendance and both expressed an interest in becoming members of the Club, they are: Greg Eberhard (Greg), Senior Pastor, First Christian Church, sponsor President GENE; and David Williams, Retired Principal, Miller Elementary School, and currently handling Business Development for PEFCU, sponsor JIM TURLEY. If no written objections are received within seven days and Rotary committee selection sheets are completed, Greg and David are eligible for introduction on or after March 7th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • SHOTS NOT SPOTS (immunization of Tippecanoe County children against childhood diseases), Tuesday, March 14th, Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, still needs volunteers during the following times: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (setup) - have four (HAMMEL; HOGUE; KOSMAN; and JAN KOEHLER and daughter, Madison) need one more volunteer; 12:00 noon - 2 p.m. - have three (HINZE; KATHY MEEKS; and SUDDARTH), need one more volunteer; 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - all spots filled (ADAMS; HANSEN; PAPE; and PRITSCHER); and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. (tear down) - have two (COHEN and RUNNELS), need three more volunteers. Sign-up sheets will be on the bulletin board at the back of the University Square banquet room.

  • 83RD ANNUAL DINNER (Dinner) - TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2000, UNIVERSITY INN (please remember, no regular Club meeting). The Dinner is about a $5,000.00 budget requirement which can be accomplished easily with broad-based Rotarian support. Plan to attend - we need your participation. Even if you are unable to attend the Dinner, please consider financial assistance to sponsor one or two of the Club’s guests, spouses of deceased Rotarians and Glee Club members. Make an effort to be present for the Dinner, Tuesday, March 21st. The evening starts with an open cash bar at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, $25.00 per person, are on sale each Tuesday by DALE MC HENRY, or designee, at the money collection table.

  • Come Sail the Rotary C’s” (Consistency, Credibility, and Continuity) is the theme for the Rotary District 656 Conference, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, 2000, Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Lebanon. The theme revolves around the Rotary International theme of Carlo Ravizza, Rotary International President - “Rotary 2000: Act With Consistency, Credibility and Continuity.” Friday, April 28th: 9:00 a.m. - Registration; Afternoon - Plenary Sessions #1 and #2; Spouses tour Donaldson’s Chocolate; 6:45 p.m. - Dinner (coat & tie, appropriate dress) and entertainment by Opus, Vocal ensemble. Saturday, April 29th: 7:00 a.m. - Registration; Morning - Plenary Sessions #3 and #4; Spouses tour Nancy Noel’s Studio (Lunch at Studio); Afternoon - Plenary Session #5 and reception for Governor Erskine and Governor Elect Bragg; 6:45 p.m.: Dinner (coat & tie, appropriate dress) and entertainment by Jeanie Kittrell & The Old St. Louis Levee Band.

    Registration Costs: Registration is $30.00 for Rotarians and $10.00 for guests; dinner/entertainment portions on Friday and Saturday evenings are $25.00 per person; Saturday lunch is $12.00; and president’s, president elect’s, alumni, and new member breakfast will be available Saturday for $8.00. Rotary has a block of 52 rooms, priced at $69.00, for those who will need overnight accommodations. Rotary District 6550 Conference registration forms are available at GRIFF’s table.

  • GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE) TEAM from ITALY will be visiting District 6560 the month of April 2000. BILL HATFIELD, Chair, GSE Committee, announced today that the Team Leader, Gaetano Toccafondi, and four female team members, all with Ph.D degrees, Maria Elena Giorgin (International Political Sciences); Gioia Rita Telli (Law); Barbara Ferretti (Architecture); and Silvia Valentini (Law), are to be hosted by the Club from Tuesday, April 25th until Friday, April 28th. Host families will be needed, more information in future “Ripples.”

James Smyth (Jim), Vocational Service Award recipient; Dan Taylor (Retired Alcoa employee who is constructing a miniature golf course near Meijer Inc.) guest of JERRY COLE; Greg Eberhard (Senior Pastor, First Christian Church) guest of EARL PARK; and David Williams (Retired Principal, Miller Elementary School, and currently Management Development, PEFCU), guest of JIM TURLEY.

HARRISON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Amy Greenan and Tim Pratt, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by LIZ SOLBERG. LIZ presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Amy and Tim.

11TH ANNUAL VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARDS PRESENTATION (Awards): President GENE introduced ELAINE CUE, Chair, Vocational Projects Committee (Committee), who on behalf of the other Committee members, see back of “Ripples”: (1) Noted that there would be two recipients, and (2) Briefly reviewed the criteria used David Heath by the Committee to select today’s recipients. ELAINE then called on DAVE LUHMAN to make the first presentation. DAVE, noting background and citing from supportive letters from nominees made the first Rotary Vocational Service Award to Rotarian and Mayor of Lafayette, DAVID L. HEATH (DAVE). James Smyth ELAINE then called on JIM KLUSMAN to make the second presentation. JIM, noting his close association with the recipient and also citing from supportive comments, made the second Rotary Vocational Service Award to S. James Smyth (Jim), Executive Director, United Way of Greater Lafayette. Congratulations to DAVE and Jim on being Rotary’s Vocational Service Award recipients this year.
