ELEVENTH ANNUAL VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARD presentation, a project of the Vocational Projects Committee (Committee), ELAINE CUE, Chair, will be the major portion of the program. The Committee has met and selected two individuals from the Greater Lafayette Community as recipients: DAVID L. HEATH, Mayor, City of Lafayette, and S. James Smyth, Executive Director, United Way.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - DON GENTRY, 11:15 to 11:45, and JERRY MC CARTHY, 11:45 to 12:15; Greeter - KRISTINE HARDEBECK; Invocation - JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; Music - SUSAN SMITH; and High School Guests (Harrison) hosted by LIZ SOLBERG.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE), requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; YB HALL - talked with YB yesterday, he seemed to be in good spirits (well, fairly good spirits, as he was going to have taxes done on Saturday), and said that he would be back to Rotary soon; BOB HIATT; MARV PHILLIPS; JOE SICER - talked with THELMA’s sister and with JOE a very very short time today, JOE came home, Lake Placid, from hospital yesterday, mind and speech good, left arm and leg are still paralyzed, has difficulty swallowing, and is very weak and tires easily so spends most of the time in bed; and BEV STONE.

NOTE from JOHN CARPENTER...He and TOM SMITH have made up with four visits to three Clubs. More visitors than members with lots of Rotarians from CANADA, ENGLAND, WALES, etc.

  • MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION & INFORMATION: JERRY MC CARTHY will conduct a new member Rotary Information Session (Session) at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 22, Tailgate Lounge, University Inn Conference Center and Suites (University Inn). New members must attend one of these Sessions in order to have sufficient information to decide whether he/she would like to become a Rotarian. If you are planning to sponsor a new member, contact GRIFF to get your prospective member scheduled into this Session.

  • MARKETING SUBCOMMITTEE of the Rotary/PMO Service Above Self Committee, immediately after the regular Club meeting, Tuesday, February 22nd, Tailgate Lounge, University Inn. Marketing Subcommittee members have been notified by mail.

LIZA is Distant Education Specialist with the Krannert/Agricultural Economics Executive MBA Program and CARL is Professor of Hospitality and Tourism with office in Stone Hall, Purdue - telephone 494-8031, FAX 494-0327. CARL’s Rotary Committees are Operations/Club Bulletin (JO WADE, Chair); Community Service Projects (LEW RUNNELS, Chair); and World Community Service (DAVE BOUGH, Chair).

  • NEW MEMBER RECEPTION (Reception) for new and prospective members and sponsors, Officers, and Directors (this invitation also includes spouses and/or special guests), 5:15 - 6:15 p.m., Thursday, February 24th, University Inn. PLEASE RSVP TO GRIFF BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18th.

  • 83RD ANNUAL DINNER (Dinner) - TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2000, UNIVERSITY INN (please remember, no regular Club meeting). OSCAR HOPKINS, Vice President and Dinner Chair, indicates a different and exciting format, i.e., Glee Club, no risers, in center of University Inn Grand Ballroom with tables around this area, some group singing, and a video about what Rotary is and what the Club does. Make an effort to be present for the Dinner, Tuesday, March 21, 2000. If you cannot attend, please help “host” our Glee Club guests. The evening starts with an open cash bar at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, $25.00 per person, are on sale each Tuesday by DALE MC HENRY, or designee, at the money collection table.

  • SHOTS NOT SPOTS (immunization of Tippecanoe County children against childhood diseases) still needs volunteers during the following times: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (setup) - have three, need two more volunteers; 12:00 noon - 2 p.m. - have two, need two more volunteers; 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - all four spots now filled; and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. (tear down) - have two, need three more volunteers. Sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board at the back of the University Square banquet room.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Lauren Loew and Kent Stein, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by PAUL ZIEMER. PAUL presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Lauren and Kent.

JERRY COLE introduced Wiley Embrey who made a most interesting presentation Wiley Embrey about his experiences as a heart transplant recipient. He noted that: Four transplant centers in IN (Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne and IU Med Center, Methodist Hospital, and St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis); Went on IU Med Center transplant list on November 1988 (at that time 39th on waiting list in IN, today 86 on waiting list in IN); Schooled extensively in three areas, i.e., Family discuss the possibility of dying; Not feel guilty about accepting an organ; and Medications (very very expensive - $2400.00 to $2600.00 per month); Three necessary variables, i.e., Think positively; Believe in God; and Family support; and Spent remaining time relating recovery experiences and responding to questions.
