Tuesday, November 23, 1999 is the annual Rotary-Kiwanis Thanksgiving Week Williamson2 joint meeting; this year Kiwanis has program responsibility. The speaker will be MAURY WILLIAMSON talking about “Down Home Thanksgiving.”

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - HOWARD DIESSLIN, 11:15 to 11:45, and ANNETTE VALENTINE, 11:45 to 12:15; Greeter - GENE HILLS; Invocation - Kiwanian Pert Parker; Music - Kiwanian Jeris Eikenberry; and High School guests (McCutcheon) hosted by DICK GRIPE.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) noted that GRIFF had received a Sunday evening, November 14th, telephone call from JAY WILEY indicating that spouse, ELEANOR, was in the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with very aggressive cancer; ELEANOR is in very serious condition. And, requested members to keep ELEANOR and JAY as well as LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN, in their thoughts and prayers. President GENE also called members attention to the very interesting and informative article about LINDA in today’s “JC”, Tuesday, November 16th.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

- SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING - JERRY MC CARTHY, Chair, announced the start of the Salvation Army “Bell Ringer Campaign.” JERRY will have a sign-up chart at Rotary until “Bell Ringing” on Saturday, December 18, 1999. There are 12 locations with four time slots (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; 12 - 2 p.m.; 2 - 4 p.m.; and 4 - 6 p.m.); this translates into 96 Rotarians, spouses, children, friends, and/or acquaintances to fill these “ringing times.” 1999 BELL RINGER CAMPAIGN ENVELOPES (Special Envelopes) for individual contributions will be enclosed with “Ripples” next week. Those Rotarians who receive “Ripples” via e-mail, currently there are 85, will be sent the Special Envelopes in a separate mailing.

- MEMBERSHIP CARDS: Membership cards were finally received from Rotary International this past week. Your membership card will also be enclosed in next week’s “Ripples.” And for the 85 Rotarians that receive their e-mail via the web, your membership card will be in the special mailing that will also include the special 1999 BELL RINGER CAMPAIGN ENVELOPES. So all Rotarians, be please make a special effort to open your Rotary mail next week.

- WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE latest disaster reports from BILL FULLER, Chair, District World Community Service: (1) Residents of several counties in New Jersey are struggling to recover from the severe destruction caused by hurricane Floyd. Countless were left homeless. District 7490. (2) Widespread evacuations and thousands homeless are the results of a volcanic eruption in Tungurahua, ECUADOR. District 4400. (3) Thousands were killed and 2.5 million left homeless as the result of a giant cyclone which struck INDIA on October 29th. District 3260. Contributions may be sent to the Rotary Foundation, PO Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675-5133. Mark the District to receive your contribution on your check.

- COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS COMMITTEE (LEW RUNNELS, Chair) PROJECT: Volunteer help is needed for the YWCA Women Domestic Violence Center’s annual holiday project, Christmas wrap, load, and deliver items. The following is the volunteer need schedule: (1) Thursday, December 9th - 9 - 11 a.m. - six to eight volunteers to wrap packages; (2) Thursday, December 16th - 9 - 11 a.m. - six to eight volunteers to load packages into boxes; (3) Saturday, December 18th - 1 - 4 p.m. - ; and Sunday, December 19th - 1 - 4 p.m. - three volunteers with pickups/SUVs and drivers for each, to deliver boxes. There will be a sign-up sheet(s) at Rotary the next two Tuesdays - Tuesday, November 23rd and 30th.

MARGARET presented certificates of recognition and President GENE presented a “Rotary Travel Mug” (4-Way Test on it) to Lisa and Michael and led the Club in reciting the 4-Way Test.

PRESIDENT STEVE THOMPSON (President STEVE), Lafayette Rotary Foundation, Inc. (Foundation), chaired the Twenty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the Foundation and was assisted by Foundation Vice President, TOM PEARSON; (Vice President TOM) Annual Report brochures were on the tables. Congratulations to JIM CARNEY; DICK GRIPE; BUTCH HANCOCK; JIM IRVIN; BILL PAPE; LIZ SOLBERG; and BETTY SUDDARTH, who received their Golden Service level ($1,000.00 or more but less than $2,500.00) framed certificates and special name badges from President STEVE and Vice President TOM.
