LAWRENCE TEDER introduced Theodore Nukes, M.D., Theodore Nukes Lafayette Neurology Associates, P.C., who made a most interesting presentation about strokes. Dr. Nukes distributed at tables a one-page information sheet which provided a basic outline of his presentation: Introduction; Symptoms; Importance of Early Detection Mechanism of Stroke; Treatment; and Risk Factor and Prevention - a copy is available from GRIFF. He noted: (1) A stroke was a sudden diminishing or loss of consciousness, sensation, and voluntary motion caused by rupture or obstruction, i.e., a clot, of an artery of the brain; (2) Approximately 600,000 strokes a year, approximately 150,000 a year result in death, and that strokes are the 3rd leading cause of death; (3) Two types of strokes, i.e., loss of blood to a part of the brain (two-thirds of all strokes are this type), or bleeding which leads to a clot(s); (4) Since June 1996 strokes are considered an emergency due to the availability of a drug, TPA , approved for use at that time for strokes, but must be administered within three hours of symptoms (if administered after three hours could make the situation worse); (5) Reviewed the 14 stroke symptoms and stressed that if these are noted, see doctor immediately because of the three hour limitation for use of TPA; and (6) Closed by reviewing risk factors and prevention: High Blood Pressure and Diabetes are high risks and can be controlled with medication and checkups; Cigarette smoking is a high risk factor and can be controlled; High Cholesterol/Triglycerides are now considered a risk; and Atrial Fibrillation (irregular beat of one part of the heart) as being one of the greatest risks. A brief Q & A session following Dr. Nukes presentation.
