ANNOUNCEMENTS:

DON’T FORGET DUES - DUES ARE LATE IF NOT PAID BY MAY 1, 1999!

BOB ADAMS and ROY WHISTLER became the 81st and 82nd Golden Service Contributors, those having given $1,000.00 but less than $2,500.00 to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) to receive presentations, framed certificates and special badges, from STEVE THOMPSON, President and TOM PEARSON, Vice President. This was a part of a Foundation quarterly report by STEVE.

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: Joann J. Chaney, Manager, Instructional Tours, Purdue University, sponsor GORDY YOUNG; and Wael A. Harb, M.D., Oncologist, Northside Cardiology of Lafayette, sponsor JERRY COLE, have been approved by the Board and Membership Selection and Classification Committee. If no written objections are received within seven days, both have completed their Rotary committee selection sheets, are eligible for introduction on or after Tuesday, May 11, 1999.

DON’T FORGET THIS SPECIAL WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE (Committee) PROJECT: Club and Foundation Boards of Directors approved this International project (Lighthouse or Ethiopia Project) which permits members to make contributions and receive tax exemption. The Project, in cooperation with three Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA Rotary Clubs (RC), is the construction of 100 light shelters, similar to the model at the 1998 International Convention in Indianapolis, to house 500-600 individuals and feed them. The amount raised by the Club will be matched by a BILL HATFIELD District 6560 fund and hopefully by a Rotary International (RI) matching grant which would permit contributions to apply toward a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) award or Sustaining Membership. DAVID BOUGH, Committee Chair, had a video, presenting information about the Project, in the foyer outside University Square. Please consider this Project as you plan your giving program; hopefully closure can be reached within the next few months. Checks are already arriving for the Project; members should make checks payable to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation and note in the lower-left hand corner that it is for the Lighthouse or Ethiopia Project.

OPPORTUNITY FOR “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”: AREA IV SENIOR GAMES are scheduled again, June 7, 1999, and help is needed for much of the same activities as last year - two-hour slots: (1) Breakfast helpers, assist with trays, drinks, etc.; (2) Lunch helpers, assist with trays, drinks, etc.; and (3) Euchre players, help with drinks. If you can help, please contact FRITZ COHEN, Senior Director, Community Avenue of Service.

ROTARY FAMILY NEWS:

- BUTCH HANCOCK and SALLY WATLINGTON (“Leader” pictures) recognized as recipients of the Sagamore of the Wabash award.

- MARTHA and AL CHISCON and CHRISTA KECK are Rotarians who names appear on the “Best Teachers Plaque” that was dedicated during Gala Week. Are there other Rotarians on the plaque?

- Neal Haskell has resigned from the Club; he has/will be joining the Rensselaer Rotary Club.

JERRY MC CARTHY introduced Prof. Charles Ingrao who gave a most interesting presentation regarding the ethnic conflict of Central Europe. He noted that we have been involved in this area four times: (1) World War I; (2) World War II; (3) 40 to 45 years after World War II due to the Soviet Union’s interest there; and (4) Early 90’s (Bosnia and now Kosovo). A person needed to be there to really appreciate this very fine presentation. Prof. Ingrao noted after the group recited the Rotary 4-Way Test that if the 4-Way Test were used in the Balkans it would help the situation. Prof. Ingrao offered to remain after the meeting to answer questions; some 40 Rotarians/guests remained for approximately 30 minutes afterwards asking questions - this was a first.

MONEY COLLECTOR, JANE TURNER, substituted for CAROLYN JONES; Invocation by TERRY WEST; Greeting by DONYA LESTER; Special Music by KENT MILLS; and Rotary piano by HARLEY FREY.
