NO REGULAR ROTARY NOON CLUB MEETING - TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 1999

Tuesday evening, March 23, 1999, is the Lafayette Rotary Club’s Annual Dinner (Dinner) with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, directed by Rotarian BRIAN BREED. Please remember that this year’s Dinner is in the Grand Ballroom, University Inn, and not the North and South Ballroom, Purdue Memorial Union, where it has been for years. There will be a cash bar beginning at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. Glee Club members, as in the past few years, will be joining us for dinner with one or two Glee Club members at each table - be sure to save one or two seats at your table for Glee Club members. Rotary name badges and check-in sheet will be located at the entrance of the Grand Ballroom; provision will be made to complete badges for spouses and/or special guests. Tickets, $25.00 per person, available until 12:00 noon, Thursday, March 18th; contact DALE MC HENRY at 474-2348 or GRIFF at 494-7218 - Office or 474-5596 - Residence.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President Elect GENE COURTANEY (President Elect GENE), substituting for President BOB GRIFFITHS who, along with spouse, CONNIE, are spending time in FL, reported: (1) DOROTHY OSMUN, spouse of JOHN, is hospitalized and gravely ill, and (2) DICK WALKER, telephone conversation this p.m., indicated that spouse, MARJORIE, is convalescing in extended care at Saint Anthony Health Care. President Elect GENE requested members to remember DOROTHY and MARJORIE in their thoughts and prayers as well as LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN, and VIRGIL ST. JOHN. It was good to see HUGH STEELE at Rotary.

ROTARIANS WHO ARE CONSIDERING PROPOSAL OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO BECOME A MEMBER should note that the Membership Education and Information Committee, JERRY MC CARTHY, Vice Chair, will be conducting an “Information Meeting”, 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 1999, University Inn. Potential candidate(s) must attend a meeting such as this to learn more about Rotary in order to decide whether they would like to become a member. Contact GRIFF for a “Membership Application” card.

TWO COMMITTEE MEETINGS, TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 1999: (1) Membership Retention Committee (check on back of “Ripples” for Committee membership), SANDY PEARLMAN, Chair, will meet at 11:30 a.m., reserved table in the University Square Dining Room; and (2) Membership Selection & Classification Committee (check on back of “Ripples” for Committee membership), GENE HILLS, Chair, will meet immediately after the regular Club meeting in the Tailgate Lounge.

PICTURES WILL NOT BE TAKEN FOR DIRECTORY on Tuesday, March 30th as previously indicated; next time will be Tuesday, April 6th.

URGENT: GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE) TEAM VISIT NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: WALLY TYNER, Chair, lists the following needs: (1) One host family (already has GLENN BOWERS, OSCAR HOPKINS, SUSAN HYCHKA, and WALLY) for four nights (Saturday through Tuesday) and four breakfasts (Sunday through Wednesday); (2) Three to assist MARY HALEY, Tuesday evening dinner host, and KATHY MEEKS; (3) Two to assist MARY HALEY, Alan Garfinkel, and LINA REEVES-KERNER with a.m. Monday professional visits: (4) One to assist BILL PAPE with Monday p.m. professional visits to SIA and Lilly; (5) GENE COURTANEY and JIM TURLEY assisting with Tuesday p.m. museum and library visits; and (6) Two to assist with other general transportation. DISTRICT 6560 CONFERENCE (Conference), April 30 - May 2, 1999, The Seasons Lodge & Conference Center, Nashville, IN. This is District Governor BILL HATFIELD’s Conference so hopefully several from the Club will attend. GRIFF has registration forms.

CONGRATULATIONS to: (1) DAVID and CATHERINE REAP on the arrival of their first child, a daughter named Rachel. Rachel was born at 3:00 a.m., Friday, March 5, 1999, at Home Hospital and weighed 6 lbs. 14 ozs.; and to (2) SUSAN SMITH on the arrival of her second grandchild, a boy named Samuel Connor Worley, born to Nicole (Smith) and Steve Worley on Sunday, March 14, 1999, in Waldorf, MD; Samuel weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. Thanks to SUSAN for a significant contribution to the Foundation in honor of Samuel Connor Worley.

JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Emilie Ertmer and Jesse Janowiak, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by STEVE MOTT. STEVE presented certificates of recognition and President Elect GENE presented “Rotary Travel Mugs” (4-Way Test on them) to Emilie and Jesse.

VISITORS: Clay and Madison Koehler, son and daughter of JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; Leslie Dotson, Feast Coordinator, Tippecanoe County Historical Association, guest of the Club, assisted Jean Andres with the program; Dr. Wael Harb (Greater Lafayette), guest of JERRY COLE (Dr. Harb is with Northside Cardiology of Lafayette); Todd Smith (Greater Lafayette), guest of LINA REEVES-KERNER (Todd is Sales Rep. with U. S. Exchange); Sara Lyn Smith (Greater Lafayette), guest of CHIRSTY SMITH (Sara Lyn is Director, Community & Family Resource Center).

CONGRATULATIONS to WALT VALENTINE (“Leader” picture) recently named 1998 Investigator of the Year by the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators.

BOB FEUER, substituting for CRAIG IRVINE, introduced Jean Andres, Coordinator, Kids First (whose purpose is to replace myths and misconceptions with understanding, acceptance and sensitivity), explained that Kids First is a collaboration of individuals and agencies concerned with special needs individuals, with volunteers performing The Kids on the Block, Inc. disability awareness puppet shows for 7-12 year-olds to promote understanding and accepting differences/disabilities. Their presentation consists of a show, script, and a Q&A session; there are approximately nine script topics available. Jean and Leslie Dotson, see “VISITORS” section, performed a puppet script about blindness.
