TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1998 - A SPECIAL FAMILY ORIENTED CLUB MEETING SPONSORED BY THE YOUTH COMMITTEE, JEFF DARLING, CHAIR. There will be special entertainment for members, children, grandchildren, et al. Also, a special children's menu - $5.00, as well as the regular buffet for adults - $7.00.

If you did not sign the special registration sheet at GRIFF's table on December 8th or 15th indicating number of adults and children you will be bringing (INCLUDE YOURSELF IN THIS NUMBER), please contact GRIFF at 494-7218 - office or 474- 5596 - residence, or e-mail, hgriff1@gte.net, and note the number of adults and children (INCLUDE YOURSELF IN THIS NUMBER) you will be bringing by Wednesday, December 23, 1998. If GRIFF not there, leave number on voice-mail; this information needed to provide the University Inn and Conference Center an estimated number.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President BOB GRIFFITHS (President BOB) requested members to remember the following in their thoughts and prayers: JERRY COLE had surgery at the Mayo Clinic on Friday, December 4th - JERRY is home, talked with FAYE this a.m. and according to her, as of yesterday p.m., he seemed to have turned the corner of getting well; LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN, who is in Chicago for special treatments; CONNIE GRIFFITHS, spouse of President BOB, CONNIE had surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital on Friday, December 4th - out of hospital and with her mother in Indianapolis; and MARGARET HALL had quadruple heart bypass surgery, Thursday, December 10th, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center - now out of intensive care and in progressive coronary care there. JIM HOBBS up and around at church on Sunday and at Rotary today, but due to back problem, walking very carefully.

LAFAYETTE FOUNDATION INC. (Foundation' QUARTERLY REPORT; Congratulations to MIKE KOSMAN and MARV PHILLIPS who today became the 79th and 80th Golden Service Contributors, those having given $1,000.00 but less than $2,500.00 to the Foundation. Framed certificates and special name badges were presented to MIKE and MARV by STEVE THOMPSON, Foundation President, and Foundation Board Member, President BOB.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING, ANN PIECHOTA, Chair, and JERRY MC CARTHY, Vice Chair - BELL RINGER CAMPAIGN ENVELOPES ARE STILL AVAILABLE, envelopes may be turned in to GRIFF. DAVE LANDGREBE, Treasurer, Lafayette Rotary Foundation, reported that as of Tuesday, December 8th, 71 Rotarians have contributed $5,310.00 to the Salvation Army.

VOCATIONAL PROJECTS COMMITTEE: ELAINE CUE, Chair, announced that Vocational Service Award nominations are due by Tuesday January 19, 1999. Criteria for making a nomination, nomination form (on reverse side of criteria for making a nomination), and a listing of past winners, are included with this issue of "Ripples." PLEASE MAKE AN EFFORT TO NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL FOR THE VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARD.

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: The Membership Education and Information Committee (Committee), JERRY MC CARTHY, Vice Chair, conducted a Rotary Information meeting today with four candidates expressing interest in becoming a member of the Club, they are: Greg Napier, Landscape & Site Planner, The Schneider Corp., sponsor SHAWN KELLY, Thomas B. Robinson, Vice President, Student Services, Purdue University, sponsor MARTHA CHISCON; Doug Taylor, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity, sponsors DON BIDDLE and MARVIN BLADE; and Robert Taylor, Campus Executive, New Technology Department Caterpillar Inc., sponsor HANS NAUMANN. These candidates have been approved by the Board and Membership Selection & Classification Committee, if no written objections are received within seven days, and upon receipt of their Rotary committee selection sheets, will be eligible for introduction on or after Tuesday, December 29, 1998.

ROTARY JEOPARDY: The questions/answers for December 15th, BRUCE OWENS, Host, and DAN HEMAN and JANE TURNER, Judges: (11 ) He holds the title of 1998-1999 President of Rotary International (Who is James L. Lacy); (2) The first official "greeter" was appointed in 1906 by the President of this IL Club (What is the Rotary Club of Chicago); (3) This individual has contributed, or on his/her behalf has been contributed, $1,000.00 or more in any one year (What is a Paul Harris Fellow); and (4) Beloved charter member of the Chicago Club, who in 1905 introduced a vibrant style of singing for club meetings and other community activities (Who was Harry Ruggles).

ROTARIAN VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE for the YWCA Women Domestic Violence Center's annual holiday celebration, as reported by BETTY SUDDARTH, Chair for this Community Service Projects Committee Project, was excellent. GENE COURTANEY, JUDITH HAMMAN, BARB HANSER, BETTY SUDDARTH, MARA WASSURN and LYNNE ZACHMANOGLOU helped with box decorating on December 10th; DENNIS CARSON, BARB HANSEN, MARGERY ISMAIL, MIKE KOSMAN, BETTY SUDDARTH, and SALLY WATUNGTON helped with box packing on December 18th; and JUDITH HAMMAN and SALLY WATLINGTON, December 19th, JON HUSTON, LEW RUNNELS, and SALLY WATLINGTON, December 20th, helped with box deliveries.

CLUB BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Monday, December 14th: (1) Lafayette Foundation Quarterly Investment Report, first nine months of 1998, distributed (available to interested members - contact GRIFF); (2) DALE MC HENRY, Treasurer, reviewed 'Cash Receipts and Disbursements Summary for November'; indicated that Directors and Officers Liability insurance premium ($550.00) had been paid - 50% Club and 60% Foundation; indicated that review of financial statement by Thieme & Adair CPA's had been completed; dues of 24 Rotarians were late - another statement to be sent the last of December; noted that there is $34,964.50 in Account #2 at Merrill Lynch; and reported that $100.00 was sent to the now Greenfield Sunrise Rotary Club; (3) Report from each of the four Avenues of Service; (4) Discussion regarding term limitation of Foundation directors; (5) Consensus to continue with recognition of 60-year Club Rotarians; New Member Reception on Thursday, February 18th or 25th; and (6) Consensus to make 'Declaration of Rotarians In Business and Professions', handsome calligraphic certificate, available to members - cost .75 - see sample at GRIFF's table.

PRESIDENT BOB introduced JO WADE who made a most interesting presentation regarding the impact of the travel/tourism industry (industry) in IN and Greater Lafayette. She noted that: Travelers spend $5.9 billion annually in IN; In Greater Lafayette, the industry is worth over $150 million in direct spending and creates 300 full-time jobs; Primary trip purposes in Greater Lafayette are personal reasons (75.7%) and business travel (18.6%); Reasons for travelers in Greater Lafayette were visiting friend or relative at Purdue (18.2%) or elsewhere (12%), Day on Campus (10.6%), sports camps (10.6%), Purdue sports events (6.5%), and attending conference/convention/trade show (6.5%); and Direct mail campaigns are best advertising medium. JO closed by asking everyone to push the Greater Lafayette area as an industry focal point.
