Tuesday, November 24, 1998 is the annual Rotary-Kiwanis Thanksgiving Week joint meeting; this year Rotary has program responsibility. The speaker will be Dr. Suellen Reed, Superintendent, Indiana Department of Education. Dr. Reed will be introduced by LAWRENCE TEDER, Program Coordinator for the month of November.
MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - MARGARET HALL, 11:15 to 11:45, and CHRISTY SMITH, 11:45 to 12:15; Greeter - TRUDY TROCHTA; Invocation - DAN HEMAN; Music - SUSAN SMITH; and no high school guests.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President BOB GRIFFITHS (President BOB) noted that HARLAND WHITE, according to JOHN MC KEE, was in St. Elizabeth Medical Center with a heart problem. President BOB requested members to remember HARLAND in their thoughts and prayers.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CONGRATULATIONS to ANNETTE and WALT VALENTINE who became grandparents for the first time on Wednesday, October 7, 1M, with the arrival of Sarah Shelby Valentine born to Kenneth and Sarah Valentine in Louisville, KY; Sarah Shelby weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces. Thanks to ANNETTE and WALT for their significant contribution to the Lafayette Foundation in honor of Sarah Shelby Valentine.

REMINDER FOR YEAR-END CONTRIBUTIONS, TAX PLANNING, and PORTFOLIO REALIGNMENT: The Lafayette Rotary Foundation and The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International can be proud of the contributions made for the improvement of the local and international communities. WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE - Hurricane "Mitch" has carved a swath of destruction across much of Central America. The situation for most Hondurans remains critical. There, 7,000 were killed by floods and mud slides; 11,000 are still missing. 70% of the roads and bridges were destroyed. Money is urgently needed to rebuild this infrastructure. Send contributions to The Rotary Foundation c/o Harris Trust & Savings Bank, P. 0. Box 71169, Chicago, IL 60694-1169. For Honduran/Guatemala relief, earmark them for District 4250, for Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, earmark them for District 4240. Additional information is posted on the Club bulletin board. SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING - ANN PIECHOTA, Chair, and JERRY MC CARTHY, Vice Chair, announced the start of the Salvation Army "Bell Ringer Campaign." ANN and JERRY will have a sign-up chart at Rotary until "Bell Ringing" on Saturday, December 19,1998. There are 12 locations with four time slots (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; 12 - 2 p.m.; 2 - 4 p.m.; and 4 - 6 p.m.); this translates into 96 Rotarians, spouses, children, friends, and/or acquaintances to fill these "ringing times." 1998 BELL RINGER CAMPAIGN ENVELOPES for individual contributions will be enclosed with "Ripples" next week; envelopes may be turned in to ANN, JERRY, DAVE LANDGREBE, Foundation Treasurer, or GRIFF.

NOTE: ARTICLE I - Election of Directors and Officers; SECTION I�Nominations will be accepted from the membership, but must be in the hands of the Nominating Committee at least ten days, Saturday, November 21, 1998, before the first regular Club meeting in December, Tuesday, December 1 1998. Each nomination must have the written support of two additional members and the written consent of the nominee.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS COMMITTEE 'MARVIN BLADE, Chair, and LEW RUNNELS, Vice Chair) PROJECT: Volunteer help - SERVICE ABOVE SELF- is needed for the YWCA Women Domestic Violence Center's annual holiday celebration, BETTY SUDDARTH, Coordinator. The following is the volunteer need schedule: (1) Thursday, December 10th - 9 - I I a.m. - eight volunteers needed to decorate boxes; (2) Friday, December 18th - 9 - 11 a.m. - six volunteers needed to pack boxes; and (3) Saturday and Sunday, December 19 and 20 - I - 4:00 p.m. - three volunteers are needed each day to deliver boxes. BETTY will have a sign-up sheet(s) at Rotary next Tuesday, November 24,1998.

ANNUAL DINNER COMMITTEE MEETING, DAN TEDER, Vice President and Committee Chair, Tuesday, December 1, 1998, immediately after the regular Club meeting, Boiler Board Room, University Inn and Conference Center. Member are listed on back of "Ripples."

LATE DUES - DALE MC HENRY, Treasurer, reported Monday, November 9,1998, at the Club Board meeting that several Rotarians have not paid their dues; those dues were due on October 31, 1998. Reminder notices are being prepared by DALE for mailing to those Rotarians who have not paid their dues for this dues period.

RIPPLES FORMAT CORRECTIONS: The next six-month supply, January - June, of "Ripples" format will be ordered in early December. If you have additions/corrections of committee member names, contact GRIFF.

JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Leighann Burke and Samuel O'Connor, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by HARLEY FREY. HARLEY presented certificates of recognition and President BOB presented a "Rotary Travel Mug" (4-Way Test on it) to Leighann and Samuel.

LAWRENCE TEDER introduced Dr. Philip Low who made an interesting, but technical, presentation regarding folate-mediated (folic acid) targeting of cancer cells. Dr. Low noted that: (1) Cancer cells divide more quickly than other cells; (2) The thrust of the research group of which he is a member is to locate ways of transporting cancer fighting agents into receptive cancer cells; and (3) It would seem that the research is having positive results in fighting certain cancer.
