October 17, 2023

From the desk of President Ron

Well, it happened, the seasonal weather has changed to the expected sun, gray, rain and combination of all three in one day!

Remainder of October we have some exciting club meetings coming up.

Foremost is Renee Brouse, District Governor, will be our special guest on October 26th.  That same day we will hear from our first round of Sophomore of the Month students from Washougal High and Camas High.  Always interesting and enlightening!

We have two new members to induct into our club in October.  Stay tuned to the actual dates.  Have you signed Natasha’s membership book yet?  Milt, our sergeant in arms, is on the hunt!

This coming Monday is International World Polio Day.  Look into the activities described on the district and local web sites and join an activity/event close to us.

Creating HOPE in the world is this year’s mission statement goal.  I want to remind us that we are dedicated to improving the economic conditions for people in our community as well as the world.  Through our service projects and giving, we can help change and improve the realities we live in each day.  Participate when you can and often with our local efforts.

Thank you if you participated this past weekend with East County Citizens Alliance (ECCA) on the trash pick-up day and the wild follower plot prep work.  In November the ECCA will have two days of planting live wildflowers and sowing wildflower seeds along state High 14.

See you at the next two meetings.

Ron

AFTER 35 YEARS, POLIO'S CORNERED -
WE MUST FINISH THE JOB

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have made great strides to reduce polio cases by 99.9% worldwide over the past 35 years, and we’ve reduced the circulation of wild polio to Pakistan and Afghanistan. That’s why as we approach this World Polio Day on 24 October, as a Rotary member, I am pleased to recognize this progress. However, I ask everyone to help us finish the job and end polio for good to ensure that this paralyzing disease does not return to polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.

From encouraging vaccine acceptance, to sharing factual vaccination information, to calling on elected officials to fund polio eradication, there are so many ways in which we can each support polio eradication efforts.

Recently, news of the eighth and ninth cases of polio this year were reported, one in Pakistan and the other in Afghanistan.  Whenever I hear the term case, I cannot think of it as a number or fact – instead, I immediately think about the child.  This child (not this case) will now live with polio forever, and their family will now have to support that child in ways they could never imagine.

To me, we should always think about the child, rather than the case number.  We need to remember our promise to save each child from this devastating disease.  The ninth child may have been a vaccine away from being protected.  A PolioPlus Society gift of $100 to District 5100 through our club is a way to reinvigorate our commitment.  It takes your small gift to PolioPlus each year to continue making progress toward our top humanitarian priority:  eradicating polio.

Rotary has an opportunity to make history by ending polio, which will be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated, and the time for action is now--visit endpolio.org to learn more about the polio eradication effort.
We will be asking for donations to End Polio at our October 19 club meeting.  Your dollars are matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Thank you for all you do for Rotary,

Tom Crozier
STATEMENT ON ISRAELI-HAMAS CONFLICT
FROM DISTRICT 5100
DISTRICT GOVERNOR RENEE BROUSE
By now I am sure that you have all heard of the violence in Israel.  It is a travesty that so many lives have been destroyed due to violence.
We in District 5100 have watched and continue to stay alert to the developing situation in the Middle East with a mixture of horror and anguish.  Our hearts are filled with sadness for the loss of life, and for those families who lost loved ones.  We abhor violence against all.

We encourage and support the clubs and will promote RI's initiatives.  Change happens at club level.  Initiatives happen there too.  We challenge everyone to identify what can be done to change outcomes for the future.  When this conflict is over, what steps can each of us take to bring a permanent, sustainable change that will result in a more peaceful tomorrow?  We Rotarians are uniquely capable of convening parties in conflict while applying the four-way test in the search for solutions.  Furthermore, we commit to non-violent resolution of conflict. It is long past time to replace violence with peace.

Meals on Wheels Support by Rotary Club of Camas Washougal

One of the recurring community support programs provided by the Rotary Club of Camas-Washougal is the weekly delivery of meals to a special segment of our population.  While the program has evolved a bit due to the COVID pandemic, the core principles remain the same – delivery of nutritious meals to our neighbors in need.

For more than 50 years, Meals on Wheels People (MOWP) has been meeting the social and nutritional needs of older adults in our community. They serve delicious and nutritious meals at dozens of dining centers in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and volunteers deliver prepared meals and conduct friendly visits to homebound elderly.  MOWP depends on more than 5,600 volunteers annually to help serve and deliver meals.  MOWP mission is to enrich the lives of seniors and assist them in maintaining independence by providing nutritious food, human connections, and social support.  MOWP also uses their expertise and capacity to serve other nutritionally at-risk populations.

Our Rotary Club is a part of that network and delivers meals to support the program.  Some of the particulars of our program support include:
•    Rotarians serve seniors who live in Camas and Washougal.
•    Meals are delivered on Tuesday.  Pick-up at 10:30 AM at Washougal Community Center.
•    Rotarians use their own vehicle to make 4 to 6 deliveries designated by the MOWP staff.
•    Clients must be at home to receive meals; meals will not be left.
•    Meals for a week or some portion thereof are prepacked and delivered weekly.
•    The time commitment is approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours.
•    Rotarians sign-up for deliveries via an on-line Sign-up Genius site.
•    Meals on Wheels volunteers have received background checks and training prior to delivery.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Meals on Wheels People and the program depends on more than 200 people every day to help prepare and deliver meals at the centers and to deliver meals. The volunteer with the friendly smile and meals for the week is often the only person some of our homebound seniors will see on an average day.

NEW VOLUNTEERS
Our Rotary Club has a dedicated group of Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers, but we can always use and need to attract some new volunteers to keep this program active.  This program is a small commitment of time, but it makes a significant impact in the lives of those seniors.   Please consider supporting this Meals on Wheels program through our Rotary Club and make a difference
