Richard's Remarks
Dear Rotarians,
Wow the weather has been amazing !!! Mask/No Mask….who cares…we can see our loved ones and close friends outdoors !!
We are gearing up for our famous Ducky Derby. This is the way we can fund our events and charities that support the work we do for our community. Sometime this week you’ll receive a letter containing 25 tickets for The Ducky Derby. OK guys….it’s time to get things going and let’s sell out those tickets.
Many thanks to Cathy, Cath, Randi, and Karen for meeting on Friday and organizing the tickets!!
Kudos to Larry and the scholarship committee for reviewing the applicant’s applications and awarding 7 scholarships to local students in our area !!!
Just a reminder….there is a Board Meeting on May 18th @ 5:45 via Zoom…no masks required !! All members are invited.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe week and remember…..Rotary Opens Opportunities !!

Hearts of Glass
You’re invited to an on-demand viewing of the documentary Hearts of Glass June 2nd-12th. We strive to bring greater awareness of the challenges in finding competitive employment opportunities, within our community, for young adults with disabilities. This film follows the initial months of operation of Vertical Harvest, a state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse that grows crops while providing meaningful, competitively-paid jobs for people with disabilities working alongside people without disabilities. The trailer can be viewed here. For additional information about this film, please visit https://www.heartsofglassfilm.com/
On June 9th, we will hold a panel discussion: Opportunity and Community Impact - Employment and Futures with members of the Washougal community, Vertical Harvest employees, and the director of the film. During this discussion, our goal is to bring together individuals who can speak to the local employment of individuals with disabilities and those from the film featuring innovative employment practices. The vision for this discussion is to align with the Washougal School District’s mission to Know, Nurture, and Challenge ALL students to rise. In addition, the district strives to promote equitable educational opportunities for all students, and this film provides a model of what is possible. It is our task as a school district to prepare students for successful post-secondary outcomes. It is our task as a community to recognize individual’s abilities and to work toward equitable inclusion into social and economic aspects of our community. We hope that this discussion will provide an opportunity to bring diverse perspectives into conversation about what is possible within Clark County.
Save the Date: June 2nd-12th
On-Demand Viewing Window
Thank you Aaron Hanson for sharing.
