Col. Angela Ochoa, Commander Little Rock Air Force Base L-R President-Elect Chris Franklin, Col. Angela Ochoa, President Neal Gladner ???????President-Elect Chris Franklin introduced our speaker, Colonel Angela F. Ochoa, who is the Commander, 19th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base and the first female to do so. With the LRAFB having about a $2 billion economic impact to AR, her responsibilities are many, but she says it is fun and very rewarding. Growing up in a small town in Northern Kentucky, Ochoa knew nothing about the military, and had no interest. But a neighbor, who was a pilot for Delta and had just gotten out of the Air Force, asked to talk with her about it. Obviously, the talk went well, as soon after, she attended a Summer Scientific Seminar at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. She immediately fell in love with the Air Force, especially the people. She was accepted into the Air Force Academy and during her junior year, she decided “this pilot thing may be something I want to try”. She got accepted for pilot training and tracked to the C130, which is the smallest yet phenomenal platform, as it is the most versatile. She has spent basically her whole career as a C130 pilot. This is her third assignment to Arkansas and she and her family love it here. As the commander at LRAFB, she is responsible for over 3,500 airmen and running the entire installation with over 10,000 people living or working there. Additionally, there are about 60,000 veterans and retirees who visit the base as it is the only military medical facility in Arkansas. While Covid stopped many of the social activities at the base, Ochoa says the mission never stopped. In fact, they just recovered a big deployment out to the Middle East and even though all US soldiers are out of Afghanistan, deployments will continue because we still have threats from that area. Within the last year, they have been working to reinvigorate relationships with the local community. Next year there is an Air Show planned with the headliner being the Thunderbirds. Right now, the runway is undergoing a $200 million Department of Defense funded construction remodel that is about 75% complete. If it is not completed in time for the Air Show, there will be an open house or some type of Air Show to get the public back out to the base. In other exciting educational news, the LRAFB is launching “Star Base”, a DOD funded STEM program specifically available for any 5th grader in the state of Arkansas. Schools can sign up for a one-week STEM education program that will also include a tour of the installation, the C130’s, robots and other “toys”. Ochoa says that they are always thinking ahead to the next threat and that it will not like those we’ve faced over the last 20 years. Previously, we’ve had full reign of the air but the future threat is a near peer with money and technology that will challenge us. She says that near peer changes how they train, fly, and operate. |

Student Guest Speaker Rotarian Richard Payton introduced our first student speaker of the year, Evan East, who is a senior at Fountain Lake High School. East has lived in Hot Springs and attended Fountain Lake his whole life. He began by acknowledging the impact on his school with the recent tragedies of two wrecks that took lives too early, as well as a teacher who passed away from cancer. Please keep Fountain Lake and Mountain Pine schools in your prayers. With a 4.1 GPA and scoring a 27 on the ACT, East is also a very outgoing athlete, competing in football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis and golf. He would like to play football at the collegiate level and plans to go to an in-state school, as yet undecided. At this time, he plans to go into some type of medical field, possibly Physical Therapy, which he could fit in with athletics. Whatever his future, he wants to find something to fulfill his heart and his checkbook. But he would love to come back to Hot Springs and likely the Fountain Lake area. He has really enjoyed the Rotary meetings, especially missing AP Chemistry.

HSNP ROTARIANS RESPOND TO THE CALL! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Worthy Village Clean Water Initiative which provides clean water filtration systems to the villages in Guatemala. Lack of clean water is the number one cause of childhood deaths in this region. $60 will provide those families who are most in-need with a Sawyer Water Filtration System that will last 7-10 years and reliably provide clean drinking water. Our club raised $720 this week, which will provide 12 families with a water filter system that will greatly improve their lives! Thank you, HSNP Rotarians! We had a goal of one water filter per table of Rotarians and YOU DID IT! Imagine a world with clean water! Rotarian Liz Robbins invites everyone to attend "Hidden Hot Springs", a tour of "The Sister Houses" on Malvern Avenue on Sunday, September 25 from 2-4pm. Tickets are $75 per person. Reach out to Liz, call 501-321-2159, go by the Historical Society office at 328 Quapaw or go to http://garlandcountyhistoricalsociety.com/ for tickets.

President Neal Gladner We began our meeting this week with a moment of silence for those who’s lives were lost, those still suffering and their families from the attacks on our nation on 9-11. This past Sunday marked the 21st anniversary of this awful day when 2,977 innocent citizens perished. 125 of them at the Pentagon, 226 on the various jets used as weapons, and the balance at the world trade towers. Many of those included firefighters and police officers who, as we are reminded, ran toward the danger. And that figure does not include those who died from the lingering health impact of those attacks, including other first responders. I know you won’t be surprised to know that Rotary responded, as well. The Rotary Club of New York started a disaster relief fund that raised over $1.4 million dollars in a matter of weeks. That included contributions from our club, as Liz Robbins found in a past edition of the BathTub. Thank you, Liz, for looking that up. Dennis Smith was the club President at that time. He told me this morning he remembers the Club Meeting – which was the day after the attack. Our club sang only one song that day, “God Bless America”. The program was then Secretary of State Sharon Priest, who ditched her prepared comments to talk, instead, about how her staff and the Capitol, in general, were responding that day. You’ll remember there were concerns about the possibility of other attacks. The Rotary Foundation formed an advisory committee to work on identifying the best ways to help. Interestingly, they worked with the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City, drawing on their experience after the bombing of the federal building there. They also started a program so Rotarians could donate their “miles” from frequent flier clubs to help those impacted with their travel needs, be it family coming to New York or Washington – or victims needing transportation to specialty clinics for treatment. On a more current matter, there was more good tourism news today, as reported by Arkansas Business. The 2021 state tourism numbers are out. Last year, tourism in Arkansas was up 29.2 per cent from 2020. And here in Hot Springs, visitation at the National Park was up 23 per cent over the prepandemic year of 2019. Of course, you’ll remember last year the National Park celebrated it’s 100th anniversary. I'll end with two quotes, both the words of Queen Elisabeth II, who, of course, died this past week. During her Christmas Broadcast in 2008, she said “When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future”. She also said, in 1991, during her Christmas Broadcast – “Let us not take ourselves too seriously. None of us has a monopoly on wisdom.” |
